40th Reunion - Homecoming

OK so we are getting a bit older and things take a little longer.  But the long awaited Homecoming registration page is now open for business.  (follow the 40th Reunion Weekend link to left)

So a couple of things to note:

  • Classmates must sign up for the Classmate package. Your guest can either sign up for the Classmate package or for the guest package that is sans 40th swag items.
  • Read the full page before going to the rest of registration pages as there is important information there (yeah sure, ok so who reads the directions on the microwave or DVD player)
  • You must purchase your Alumni event tickets from CGAAA and we have the link on the registration page. That's how you get tickets for the events.
  • Memorabilia: all are encouraged to purchase the embroidered fleece jacket which will be our cold weather attire for the March On.
  • The desired attire for the various events:
    • Golf: something with class logo (prior year hats??)
    • Welcome Social: casual
    • Tailgate & March On: 40th Ball Cap and if weather is not hot - the 40th Fleece Jacket. If too hot then no jackets.
    • Class Dinner: Jacket/Slacks - tie optional (you can always wear the Blazer turtleneck!!)
  • NameTags:  Please wear them for all Class gatherings (classmates and guests) except for golf.
  • Name Tag Holders:  We will have magnetic backed name tag holders. And would like to recycle them at then end of the dinner...but if you want it, it is yours to keep!
  • Alumni Association: only just over 50% of the class are members. Join and pay your dues to our alma mater and get the coveted CG Alumni Bulletin as well as other CGA notices.
  • Class Fund: We are 2/3's the way to meeting our target of $230K to support upgrades to CGC EAGLE. Some classmates had the opporutnity to see the improvements our class gift fund was able to make on EAGLE. Let's all contribute to meet our goal and keep EAGLE America's Flagship!! See Class Fundraising tab on our web site.
  • While many have joined us on this website, our contact list (profiles) is still short on capturing all classmates - graduates or not. Let's reach out and bring classmates back in contact through our website.

Registration closes 01 Sep so we can get the embroidery orders in!!

Let's hope for a sunny New England weekend!!
Yours faithfully, Bryon

24 June 2018

Two Score and four years ago, our fathers (and maybe mothers) brought forth their young'ins, the fruit of their loins, to a typical New England College - boys becoming...wel, older boys, that were forged to become known as the Great Class of 1978!!!  Yes fellas that is us!!!  So Classmates, we are looking over the transom at 44 short years.  Although bonded in the sea and its lore, we all have our own tracklines through the journey of our lives.  In our 40th Reunion year, I hope most will join us at CGA in October for camaraderie and to reminise as we all spin the yarn of our journey over these 44 years.  Oh, and of course imbibe to loosen the tongue and the brain, so our sea stories are shared in our own image!!  Happy 44th birthday Class of 1978~~~~

Congratulations classmates!!

24 May 2018

Greetings classmates and happy 40th Anniversary of our CGA graduation!!  And for those who chose another path, this would have been your CGA graduation date with the Great Class of 1978!!

Yesterday Vice President Pence presided over the graduation of CGA 2018. The long blue line continues.

Every classmate I am in contact with has become successful in their own way.  Says much about the young men that entered Chase Hall in June 1974.  Some left early, some left later, some graduated, some did their service time, and some made the CG a career.  But all successful!!  I hope to see all at the 40th so we can learn about your successes and perhaps your plans for our well earned retirement years!!

17 Nov 2017

Please save the date  11-14 Oct 2018.  The planning committee is kicking off the planning so feel welcome to pass along your thoughts.  We are trying to maximize attendence as we are not getting any younger!!  ...if you know what I mean.  And you are also welcome to join the commitee.  Send me an e-mail @

We will soon have the first notice on the 40th for planning purposes.  There wil be a link to the Mystic Marriott for our special group rate of $209/night - we blocked only 50 rooms...we may be able to get more if we fill up but CGA '68 is staying there (their 50th) so they  may be sucking up rooms!!

Please get the word out for classmates to update their profiles with current e-mails!!

Go Bears!  Bryon

24 Jun 2017

Gentlemen and significant others - it has been 43 years on this date we entered the Hallowed Hall of Chase Hall.  With an overnight bag in hand, we checked in, were braced up against the bulkhead (I thought it was a wall), marched to the barber shop in our civilian attire, paraded to the issue room, and were taught to make a rack tight enough to bounce a quarter!!  We met our classmates, we met our Cadre, we met our Summer Ensign.  We met our best friend - our M1 rifle, we soon learned that the Head Orderly is not the leader of clean up duties, we began to memorize our Running Light, our summer bible.  We learned our 01 oz tooth brush was as hard to hold up with extended arms as was our 10.5 lb M1~~  We had no clue!!!

Well 43 years later - are we still clueless??  I think not.  We all survived our desitiny...some departing for a non-military education, some endured longer, and some graduated...some stayed a few years, and some stayed too many years.  We learned to look after each other, a we were one - the Class of '78.  Which was re-enforced with daily rounds of 78 push ups!!  But we are all classmates none-the-less.  We are all successful in our own right.  And we still share a comon bond, a fraternal brotherhood whether we stayed a few days or so many years.  So wonder where the fleeting time has gone, but know we are all the Great Class of 1978!!

Go Bears...Bryon
(Save the date for 11-14 Oct 2018 - our 40th Reunion!!)

24 June 2016

On this day in 1974, a short 42 years ago, we joined as a class at USCGA.  Some stayed until graduation, some stayed into the academic years, and some stayed long enough for a classy haircut.  No matter, we were the Great Class of 1978!!  Think about our 40th reunion in Oct 2018.  I know I am as is the Reunion Planning Committee.  Please consider joining the planning or even taking the lead!!  At the very least send me an e-mail with your thoughts on mementos, main 40th memorabilia, overall weeeknd venue, and theme for our class gatherings - welcome, tailgate, Sat eveing dinner, etc.

Your faithful classmate, Bryon

Happy New Year Classmates!!

I am prepping the next classnotes for the Bulletin.  So if you have any news and photos please e-mail to me at

Also please send me a CD with your 35th reunion photos.  Much appreciated.

Since we were in the middle of Marching On, I have provided the words that were read when we were taking the field!!  I believe they reflect our class from whence we came to what we contributed and where we are now.  Our Class Alumni Finance committee recently pledged $35K for Jacob Rock upgrades and repairs.  Your contributions are much appreciated.  Please share with them any suggestions for future projects.

Meanwhile, best wishes to all in this new year...lets get more classmates on this site with updated e-mail/contact info.

March On for Class of 1978:

Just over Thirty-five years ago, the Great Class of 1978 departed from the Academy's hallowed grounds and brought their greatness to the 'Real" Coast Guard.  Although not a favorite year group of the cadet administration, for many reasons that are now emboldened in lore through sea stories told at officer's clubs and various ports of call, the Great Class of 1978 went on to accomplish many noteworthy achievements such as the many commanding officers afloat and ashore, creating influential service policies, acquiring ships - boats - aviation assets - C4ISR systems, leading the Service with seven flag officers, and most importantly leaving a legacy of trained and qualified sailors - officer and enlisted, to carry on with excellence, our proud Coast Guard.  They truly live up to their class call, '78 is Great!!

As long as you are here, take a look at what our classmates have been up to by checking out their profiles or posting comments/pictures to the Message Forum. We plan on keeping this website alive , so consider it the place to go for all things CGA78.

Objee Rocks!
