Class of 1978 50-Year Gift Updates

The Class Gift Committee has been working diligently on finalizing details for our Anniversary Gift to the Academy Corps of Cadets. As previously reported, the gift will entail an endowment to fund projects and activities aligned with a set of principles associated with a true hero of the Coast Guard, Captain "Roaring Mike" Healy. His command of the Revenue Cutter Bear in late 19th century Alaskan waters exemplified the virtues of Character, Resilience, and Innovation that we wish to encourage and nurture in the future leaders of the Coast Guard.

In conjunction with our fund raising goal of $780,000 for the Class of 1978 Captain Michael Healy Endowment, the Gift Committee has established a Pledge Recognition program that acknowledges individual classmate contributions. Full details can be found on the Class Project page, but in short there are six designated contribution levels, each with an associated Thank You gift. In addition, the Gift Committee authorized the purchase and installation of two tall Sweetgum trees planted on either side of the Alumni Center building entrance. These trees will stand as a long-term living tribute of our commitment to the vital development of the Corps of Cadets. Next to the trees will be a granite marker and bronze plaque describing our gift and intentions. Currently in development are plans for a class time capsule to be buried beneath the marker - stay tuned for further details!

If you have already made a donation or pledge to the endowment fund, Thank You very much for your generosity!! If you are still considering a pledge or donation, now would be a great time to forward progress toward our funding target and still get in on the 2025 tax year deductions [go to the Donation Location]. Keep in mind that any gift, no matter how small ($19.78) or large ($19,780), is appreciated since our primary goal is to solicit participation from 100% of all our classmates. Your involvement and contributions will help the Great Class of 1978 leave a sustainable legacy supporting the professional character and readiness of future Coast Guard officers.
